The Carthusian Monastery of Pavia

The Carthusian Monastery of Pavia, dedicated to Saint Mary of the Graces, was founded by Gian Galeazzo Visconti on the 27th of August 1396. The amazing marble façade, in Renaissance style, is decorated with basrelifs representing episodes of the life of Christ and the Vergin, with countless statues of saints, apostles and prophets. The inside of the church is characterized by the lombard-gothic style; the funerary monument of Ludovico Maria Sforza and Beatrice d'Este, sculpted by Cristoforo Solari, can be admired in the left part of the transept whereas the mausoleum of Gian Galeazzo Visconti - the founder of the monastery - is settled in the right transept. The monastery is completed by the Small Cloister , enriched with terracotta decorations (heads and busts of saints, prophets and monks) and by the Big Cloister; both were designed by Guiniforte Solari. In the Refectory, one of the first builings of the monastery, dont't forget to admire the Bergognone's fresco Madonna with the breast-fed Child.
